A perspective from the former commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East.
The U.S. military divides the world into six “areas of responsibility,” each with its own command structure that coordinates the various forces in the region and works together with local allies. In this century, the most active of these has been Central Command (CENTCOM), which includes most of the Middle East, Afghanistan, and some of other parts of Central Asia. The Department of Defense made the consequential decision in 2021 to bring Israel under CENTCOM’s umbrella. By doing so, it not only made the current, unprecedented joint operation against Iran possible, but also enabled close cooperation between Israel and the Arab states.
