Smaller than Switzerland and less populous than Bosnia, Moldova is a land even the well-educated would struggle to locate on a map. But its capital, at least when called by its former of name of Kishinev, is well known to Jews because of the terrible pogrom that happened there in 1903. At that time the city (now known by its Romanian name, Chișinău) was home to a thriving Jewish population, which arrived after the Russians seized the territory from the Ottomans in the early 19th century.
