Judaism Meets the Robots

A fresh look at the brave new world of artificial intelligence.

Not so long ago, the excellent blog Torah Musings stopped providing short summaries of articles included in its daily roundup, and turned the task over to an artificial-intelligence software. This does not mean that Rabbi Gil Student, who runs the website, embraces artificial intelligence without hesitation. Quite the contrary. In this conversation with Dovidchai Abramchayev, Student considers some of the religious implications of this revolutionary technology. Among much else, he asks a question that comes naturally to the rabbinic mind, but not necessarily to others: who can be held liable for torts committed by a chatbot or robot?
