“When we go out into the streets like this, Hamas sees us falling apart from within.”
In Israel yesterday, there were massive protests and an attempted general strike in favor of the release of the remaining hostages and against the government’s decision to pursue the war into the remaining quarter of Gaza. It is not hard to understand the public’s frustration with the government on whose watch the October 7 onslaught occurred and with the failure—after 22 months—to bring the remaining hostages home or to defeat Hamas decisively. Moreover, Israelis’ fears that hostages might be killed in the fighting, or that (as happened in one instance in 2024) their captors might murder them if the IDF gets close, are justified.
