Bahrain and the UAE fear demography, Iran, and a withdrawing U.S.

Most Israelis, let alone most Americans, know little about either Bahrain or the United Arab Emirates—save that they are small and rich. Among the most salient facts about these two countries, writes Martin Kramer, is that citizens make a minority of their populations, creating a potential demographic problem far more severe than Israel’s. For other reasons too, above all their proximity to a larger, more powerful, and dangerous Iran, these nations are vulnerable.
