Michel Foucault’s Love Affair with Shiite Islamists

He wasn’t drawn to the ayatollah despite his religious fanaticism, but because of it.

Much has been said about the far left’s seeming indifference to the slaughter of Iranian protesters. But the history of progressive sympathy for the Islamic Republic goes back to the regime’s inception, and began with the French philosopher Michel Foucault, who remains one of the most influential thinkers in the humanities and social sciences. Foucault was enchanted by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini when he heard him speak in France in October 1978, shortly before the latter’s triumphant return to Iran. Tim Black writes:
