Preserving Eastern Europe’s Vanished Mezuzahs

Recreating artifacts from impressions in doorways.

Eastern Europe, and Poland in particular, is filled with houses once inhabited by Jews—most of whom were driven out or murdered during World War II. These houses can be identified by the marks left by the mezuzahs once installed in their doorways, which have led Helena Czernek and Aleksander Prugar to undertake an unusual project:
