Remembering Amalek Means Remembering That Jews Fight Back

If we weren’t willing to fight for our values, any covenant with God would be meaningless.

On the Saturday before Purim, known as Shabbat Zakhor (the Sabbath of “Remember!”), synagogues read the passage from Deuteronomy enjoining Jews not to forget the unprovoked attack of the Amalekites on their ancestors as the latter left Egypt. The parallel passage in Exodus is read this morning before the Megillah. Haman, the villain of the book of Esther, is a descendent of the Amalekite king, and Amalek through the ages has been a symbol of implacable anti-Semitism.
