Born to a distinguished Orthodox German family, Shlomo Carlebach (1925–1994) was able to capture something of the spirit of the Jewish renewal movement of the 1970s with his innovative religious melodies, personal charisma, and popular version of Hasidism. His tunes have since permeated both Orthodox and non-Orthodox synagogues and Shabbat tables. A recent documentary on Carlebach addresses the serious accusations of sexual misconduct that emerged after his death. Shmuel Munitz comments:
