Syria Gives Up Its Nuclear Material, and Its Russian Bases

A diplomatic win for Israel and the U.S.

In 2007, the Israeli air force destroyed a Syrian nuclear reactor before it became operational. On Tuesday, the current government in Damascus announced that—following year-long secret negotiations with the U.S. and Israel—it has agreed to allow international inspectors to remove remaining nuclear materials from the country.
