When a Yiddish Poet Went to a Lubavitch Rabbi to Bury His Father

Wednesday night marked “the night of the murdered poets,” when, in 1952, thirteen prominent Soviet Jews, including some great Yiddish writers, were executed at Stalin’s orders—as part of a broader anti-Semitic campaign. Perhaps the most accomplished literary figure among them was the poet and playwright Peretz Markish. In her memoirs, Chana Schneerson, the mother of the seventh Lubavitcher rebbe, comments on Markish’s arrest in 1949. At the time her husband was the rabbi of the city of Dnepropetrovsk (previously Ekaterinoslav, now Dnipro, Ukraine):
