Last year, the haredi author, activist, and rabbinic judge Yehoshua Pfeffer announced that he had chosen to be conscripted into the IDF. He did so not only out of a desire to serve his country at a time of crisis, but also to set an example for other Israeli Haredim about how to relate to military service and the Jewish state.
