The Haredi Case for Joining Israeli Society

It’s about more than the IDF.

Last year, the haredi author, activist, and rabbinic judge Yehoshua Pfeffer announced that he had chosen to be conscripted into the IDF. He did so not only out of a desire to serve his country at a time of crisis, but also to set an example for other Israeli Haredim about how to relate to military service and the Jewish state. In this conversation with Justin Pines, Rabbi Pfeffer discusses these topics, but focuses primarily on a broader view of haredi theology and society—both its accomplishments and its need for reform.
