The Smithsonian-affiliated Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History’s current exhibit, The First Salute, focuses on the visit of an American warship to the Dutch-ruled Caribbean island of St. Eustatius in 1776. The formal welcome the vessel received arguably constituted the first international recognition of American independence. In her review of the exhibit, Jenna Weissman Joselit writes:
