The Lebanese Army Watches Hizballah Return
The pilot zones aren’t working.
A similar test is underway in Lebanon. U.S.-brokered agreements between Beirut and Jerusalem have arranged for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) to move into villages in the southern part of the country to confiscate arms and to prevent Hizballah from reestablishing its strongholds there. By showing that it can effectively keep the terrorist group out of these “pilot zones,” the LAF is supposed to pave the way for Israeli withdrawals, and build confidence in the Lebanese government’s ability to maintain the peace. So far, pilot zones have been established in three villages, and the results are not encouraging. Claudia Groeling and Ralph Atrach report from the first of these, in Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh:
