The Middle Path of Rabbi Meir Simchah of Dvinsk

An approach to communal politics rooted in theology.

The debates taking place within the Orthodox world today had their parallels—with significant differences—in the religious communities of Eastern Europe a century ago. Chaim Oscar Jacob examines the role played in these disputes by Rabbi Meir Simchah ha-Kohen of Dvinsk (modern-day Daugavpils, Latvia), the 100th anniversary of whose death fell yesterday on the Jewish calendar. Best known for his commentaries on Maimonides’s code of Jewish law and on the Pentateuch, this rabbi was very much a product of the old world of non-hasidic, Russian-Jewish scholarship:
