For the past many years, on the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, Mosaic has reposted a powerful essay, first published in 1981, by the late Jewish historian Frank Talmage. Because this year this day of fasting and mourning falls on Saturday night and Sunday, we’re posting it today. Talmage reflects on a visit to the Spanish city of Tortosa on Tisha b’Av, and the tradition that the expulsion of the Jews from Spain fell on this date.
