Of the five tragedies that the Talmud associates with the Ninth of Av, two concern the suppression of the Bar Kokhba rebellion, the last major attempt of the Jews to throw off Roman rule, which lasted from 132 through 136 CE. One was the fall of Beitar, the headquarters of the revolt; the other was the plowing of the area where the Temple once stood, to emphasize to the Jews that they had been defeated.
