The World of 17th- and 18th-Century Jewish Midwives

And their role in communal life.

In the book of Exodus, the midwives Shifra and Puah appear as heroic figures, although it is not clear whether they are Israelites or Egyptians. In northern Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, Jewish women tended to prefer Jewish midwives when they were available. These women, who saw themselves as trained professionals, played important functions in communal life, not only delivering babies but also maintaining records and providing medical and even ritual advice. Jordan Katz explains in conversation with Nachi Weinstein. (Audio, 66 minutes.)
