Tom Stoppard’s Zionist Work of Art

Remembering a genius and a Jew.

Tom Stoppard, perhaps the greatest English-language playwright and screenwriter of our times, died on Saturday at the age of eighty-eight. A native of what was then Czechoslovakia, Stoppard only realized that his parents were Jews later in life. Years after the revelation, a comment by a fictional character accusing Stoppard, Madeleine Albright, and other people of Jewish descent of running away from their past out of a desire to “play it safe” moved him to reconsider.
