Toronto’s Rabbis Take a Stand against Physician-Assisted Suicide

“Life is a sacred gift from the Almighty.”

In Canada, it is estimated that one in every twenty deaths is the result of medical assistance in dying (MAID), the official euphemism for the doctor-administered suicide that recent legal changes have made far more accessible. The Toronto Board of Rabbis, a multidenominational group, has come out against the practice. But a recently publicized letter composed by the city’s Orthodox Rabbinical Council takes a significantly harsher stance. The rabbis write:
