Two Great Soviet Jewish Poets, Now in Translation

In English texts on Judaism, the holiest of God’s appellations is sometimes referred to as the “ineffable name.” And in 1945, a Jewish writer named Ilya Ehrenburg appealed to the Soviet censors to publish what he called “some unutterable art.” At least, that’s how Anna Krushelnitskaya renders the Russian phrase employed by Ehrenburg, in her recently published collection of his poems in translation. Maxim Shrayer reviews this volume, alongside a translation of the verse of Semyon Lipkin, another great figure of Soviet Jewish literature:
