This week’s Torah reading contains the story of Noah and his Ark, the Tower of Babel, and, from the biblical perspective, a history of humanity from the Flood to Abraham. Along with the earlier chapters of Genesis, these narratives—and, more importantly what these narratives omit—inspired an entire genre of ancient writings.
