Was There a Book of Noah?

The strange story of antediluvian literature.

This week’s Torah reading contains the story of Noah and his Ark, the Tower of Babel, and, from the biblical perspective, a history of humanity from the Flood to Abraham. Along with the earlier chapters of Genesis, these narratives—and, more importantly what these narratives omit—inspired an entire genre of ancient writings. These texts seem mostly to have been composed in the late Second Temple period and the early centuries of the Common Era. Liv Ingeborg Lied writes:
