Why Israel’s Relations with Chad Matter
The road to good relations with the Muslim world doesn’t run through Ramallah.
On Sunday, Benjamin Netanyahu visited the African nation of Chad to meet with its president; the two agreed to renew the diplomatic ties that had been severed in 1972 under pressure from Libya, Chad’s northern neighbor. A Muslim-majority country, whose official languages are French and Arabic, Chad plays a major role in central African geopolitics. Dore Gold explains that good relations with the country will help Israel make further diplomatic inroads into the continent, and demonstrates that the peace process is not a prerequisite to improved ties with the Arab and Muslim world.
