A 66-Year-Old Film Recalls a Bygone Israel and a Bygone Tolerance

Description of a Struggle.

In 1960, a filmmaker named Chris Marker spent four weeks in Israel making a documentary about the still-young country, titled Description of a Struggle. Born Christian Hippolyte François Bouche-Villeneuve in France, Marker liked to claim he was born in Mongolia. Matti Friedman writes that the film remains “hypnotic” to this day, and displays the director’s “humane optimism and sense of humor.”
