What the Numbers Don’t Say about Religion in America

Are there robust communities capable of sustaining belief and practice?

In 2023, Asbury University, a small Christian college in Kentucky, was the site of a weeks-long, unplanned display of intense religious devotion that involved some 50,000 people—reminiscent of scenes from the Great Awakenings of the 18th and 19th centuries. Although some took this as a demonstration that traditional religion is making a comeback, data about church attendance from recent years suggest that, overall, Americans are not returning to the fold.
