An Ancient Synagogue May Have Been Uncovered in Spain

A menorah, Hebrew graffiti, and a missing cemetery.

From Saturday night to Sunday night, Jews will fast and mourn the destruction of the two Temples. But the fast of Tisha b’Av commemorates other calamities as well. Many congregations, especially Ashkenazi ones, will read an elegy for the “martyrs of York,” commemorating a massacre that took place in 1190, and that could be seen as the crest of a wave of English anti-Semitism that began with the death of William of Norwich. Tradition also has it that the Jews were expelled from Spain on the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, 1492.
