Dogs and Other Beasts in the Passover Haggadah

An excursion into medieval Jewish art history.

Yesterday was the first day of the Hebrew month of Nissan, in which Passover falls, and thus it is not too soon to start thinking about the Haggadah, the book containing the seder liturgy. Marc Michael Epstein, who has written a series of articles for Mosaic about illuminated medieval Haggadahs, has recently released a new book about Jewish art in the Middle Ages. While Epstein wrote once about why an image of a pig ended up in a 14th-century Haggadah, Stuart Halpern points to what Epstein has to say about dogs:
