Rosh Hashanah’s Three Child Sacrifices

The binding of Samuel.

Although Rosh Hashanah has passed, the Ten Days of Repentance stretch through Yom Kippur, and seem as good a time as any to discuss the biblical passages read on the earlier holiday. Kate Rozansky sees a common theme that unites all four: the Torah readings of the first and second days (Genesis 21 and 22) and the respective prophetic readings (1Samuel 1:1–2:10 and Jeremiah 31:1-19). Rozansky begins by focusing on the passage from Samuel, where the childless Hannah, on her annual trip to the sanctuary at Shiloh, promises God that, if He gives her a son, she will dedicate him from childhood to divine service:
