The Voice That Wasn’t in the Wilderness
How Jews and Christians read one verse in Isaiah.
In synagogues tomorrow, the prophetic reading comes from Isaiah 40, which begins, “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people.” Its most famous verse is probably the third, “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God,” cited in the opening lines of the Gospel of Mark. Mark, along with the other three Gospels, interprets the person crying in the wilderness as John the Baptist. But, argues Rabbi David Freidenreich, this exegesis seems to lie in an incorrect reading of the text, which should instead be rendered:
