Hellenism Wasn’t Just Idolatry, but a Distorted View of Religion

A fresh look at the ideological conflict behind the Hanukkah story.

Rabbi Norman Lamm was one of the great proponents of a version of Judaism that embraces secular education, civic engagement, and the best of the Western tradition. At least superficially, Hanukkah seems to represent the opposition vision: it celebrates a military victory over those in Jerusalem who were eager to take on the ways of Athens.
